Ukraine has a well-developed railway network and train system. It’s one of the most convenient and safest ways to travel around the country. Tickets are relatively inexpensive, and trains can take you almost anywhere — to any region, large city, or picturesque village.

To travel by train in Ukraine, you’ll need to buy a ticket. There are several ways to do this:

1. Online.
The easiest way is to buy tickets on the official Ukrzaliznytsia website (https://booking.uz.gov.ua/en/) or via the Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app. The service is available in English, so visitors from other countries can easily navigate it. After paying by bank card, you’ll receive an electronic ticket in PDF format with a QR code. Simply show the ticket to the conductor on your phone screen, find your seat in the carriage, and enjoy your trip.

2. At the station ticket office.
You can buy tickets for any route and train at any railway station in Ukraine. This option is convenient because you can get assistance when purchasing and pay in cash.

Useful things to know:

  • Ticket sales for trains in Ukraine open 20 days before the travel date. For example, if you plan to travel on November 20, you can buy your ticket starting from November 1. However, for international trains, this period may differ.

  • It can sometimes be difficult to get tickets for popular routes, such as trains to and from Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and other major or tourist destinations. In this case, the Ukrzaliznytsia app allows you to set up notifications when tickets become available for your chosen train. Alternatively, you can simply check the official website regularly and buy the tickets as soon as they appear.

  • Always double-check the departure time, arrival time, carriage type, and seat number.

Travelling by train in Ukraine is fast, comfortable, and gives you the chance to see the country from the inside. So choose your seat, hop on the train, and enjoy your journey through Ukraine!
